United Airlines To Recall 24 Boeing 777 Aircraft Following Flight Failure

The failure of the engine of a United Airlines flight last Saturday shortly after taking off from Denver (Colorado) has set off the alarms, despite not causing deaths or injuries.

The airline announced this Sunday that it has decided to ground the 24 aircraft that have the model that failed, a Boeing 777, after the federal aviation agency (the FAA, in its acronym in English) announced an additional inspection of the jets . In parallel, according to Reuters, Japan also decided to suspend the use while it studies new measures to take.

The event on Saturday produced shocking images . As a result of the engine failure, parts of the plane fell on Denver and police in Broomfield, a nearby suburb, had to ask people to stay indoors.

In one of the photographs you could even see how a piece of the engine had ended up near a house. It was flight 328 at 1:30 p.m. (local time), bound for Honolulu (Hawaii), operated by a Boeing and with a Pratt & Whitney 4000 engine.

Japan’s Transport Ministry has ordered Japan Airlines and ANA airlines to halt the use of 777 aircraft with the engine while it considers further action, according to Reuters. According to the Government, on December 4 there was an incident with a plane of the same age as the one that had the problem last Saturday.

In that case, it was a Japan Airlines flight that departed from Naha airport to Tokyo and had to return due to the malfunction of the left engine when it was 100 kilometers from Naha.

FAA Chief Steve Dickson said in a statement that the agency had reviewed all available safety data on Saturday’s breakdown and, based on the first information gathered, should “reinforce the inspection of the hollow fan blades that they are exclusive to this engine model, used only in the Boeing 777 ”.

According to the agency, only airlines in the United States, Japan and South Korea use the 777 with the type of P&W 4000 engine that suffered the failure.

The inspectors were meeting this Sunday with technicians from the manufacturing company and Boeing trying to clarify what happened. United Airlines, for its part, stressed the professionalism of its crew on Saturday and stressed that safety is its “top priority.”

The episode takes place after a serious crisis suffered by Boeing as a result of the problems of the 737 Max model . The US aviation giant reached an agreement with the Justice Department earlier this year to pay $ 2.5 billion, including fines and compensation, to avoid going to trial.

The Boeing 777-200 is the largest aircraft in use since 1990. According to company data, aircraft have experienced less than one major accident per million departures, one of the lowest accident rates in the world. any major commercial aircraft, The Washington Post reports .
